How to Set Up Product Variants

How to Use Product Variants

In this article, we will explain how Product Variants work in Franpos and how to configure them.

What Are Product Variants?

Product Variants allow multiple products to be grouped together and displayed as alternative options on eCommerce. Variants are commonly used for products that differ by color, size, flavor, model, or other attributes while still representing the same product family.

For example, a Scanner may be available in both Wireless and Wired versions. Product Variants allow customers to switch between these options directly from the product page without searching for each product separately.

Option 1: Manual Setup Through Product Details

Follow these steps to manually link products as variants:

  1. Create all products individually in the Franpos catalog.
  2. Open one of the products in Product Management.
  3. Navigate to the Product Variant tab.
  4. Use the search field to find and select the products you would like to link as variants.
  5. Save the product.

If multiple products should all be linked together as variants, you can use Batch Actions.

  1. Open the Manage Products & Services page.
  2. Select all products that should belong to the same variant group.

  3. Click Batch Actions.
  4. Select Link Selected as Variants.
  5. Confirm the action.

This method automatically creates variant relationships between all selected products.

Option 3: Import Product Variants

Product Variants can also be configured during product import.

  1. Open the Product Import template.
  2. Locate the Product Variants column.
  3. Enter a comma-separated list of SKUs that should be linked as variants.
  4. Import the file.

Important Notes

  • Products linked as variants remain separate catalog items and maintain their own inventory, pricing, SKU, and reporting information.
  • Adding a product variant to one item does not automatically create the reverse relationship. If Product A is linked to Product B, Product B should also be linked back to Product A.
  • Products can belong to multiple variant groups.
  • If Show Online is enabled within Product Variant settings, variants may still appear on eCommerce even if the standard Show on eCommerce option is disabled.
Important: Product Variants do not share inventory. Each variant maintains its own stock quantity, pricing, and product information.

How Product Variants Appear on eCommerce

Once Product Variants have been configured, customers will see alternative product options directly on the product page.

Selecting a different variant automatically opens the selected product while maintaining a seamless shopping experience.

This allows customers to browse similar products without performing additional searches.

Best Practices

  • Use Product Variants for products that are closely related but maintained as separate catalog items.
  • Keep variant names consistent so customers can easily identify differences between products.
  • Link variants in both directions to ensure a complete customer experience.
  • Use Matrix Items instead of Product Variants when managing large size and color combinations.
  • Verify variant visibility on eCommerce after configuration.
  • Review product images to ensure each variant displays the correct image.

Properly configured Product Variants improve the customer shopping experience by making it easier to navigate between related products and find the desired option.
