Protecting Yourself from Retail Scams in 2024

As retail scams reach an all-time high in 2024, we want to ensure our customers are fully informed and prepared to recognize and prevent fraudulent schemes. A recent tactic involves scammers posing as Franpos representatives, attempting to mislead retailers into processing unauthorized refunds.

How This Scam Works:

  1. Caller Impersonation: Scammers will contact you, pretending to be representatives from Franpos, a payment processing company, or an affiliated partner.

  2. Calibration Request: They’ll claim they need to “calibrate” or “test” your PIN Pad, creating a false sense of urgency.

  3. Refund Request: To complete this so-called "calibration," they will instruct you to process a refund and may even provide card numbers, claiming they are "test cards."

Please remember:

  • Franpos employees will NEVER ask you to process a refund as part of troubleshooting or calibration.
  • Franpos will NEVER provide you with card numbers for any reason.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. Regardless of who the caller claims to be—Franpos, a payment company, or any associated partner—do not proceed with refund or calibration requests.

Strengthen Security: Disable Refund Permissions for Certain Employees

To help prevent this type of scam, we recommend updating your security settings:

  • Disable Refund Permissions: Disable the “Allow to refund with receipt” and “Allow to refund without receipt” permissions for cashiers and front desk employees.
  • Enable Refund Permissions for Managers Only: Grant refund permissions only to managers and owners.

New Feature: Cancel a Refund Transaction 4.7.3

If you do accidentally process a refund due to a scam, Franpos now offers a feature to cancel the refund. Please review our article on how to cancel a credit/debit refund transaction for step-by-step instructions.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Call

  1. Hang Up: As soon as you hear anything about “calibration” or “refund,” disconnect the call.
  2. Report the Call: Contact Franpos Support to report the details and help us monitor these scams.
  3. Stay Vigilant: Be cautious of any unsolicited calls requesting financial transactions or account access.

At Franpos, your security is our priority. Your awareness and proactive steps help protect your business. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our community secure!
